Running Linux in VMWare on Windows
The Easy Way
The easiest way to run Linux on Windows (within a window) is to:
- Download and install the free
VMWare Player.
- Note: You can check out other pre-made virtual machines
for VMWare (called "appliances")
here.
- Download and uncompress/un-rar this
Ubuntu
VMWare Image (the uncompressed VMWare image takes about 3GB of
disk space).
- Note: The username and password are both
jars
for this particular installation.
- Note: In order to de-compress/un-rar this file,
you'll need either the shareware version of
WinRar or a
freeware program like
7-Zip.
- Note:
Ubuntu
is a Debian-based distribution of Linux. The other popular Linux
distribution is RedHat's
Fedora.
- Launch your uncompressed VMWare application (the
Ubuntu.vmx
file)
with the VMWare Player.
- Note: you'll probably need about 13GB of free disk
space or your virtual machine might not launch and complain
about not having enough free disk space.
The Adventurous Way
If you're more adventurous and want to roll your own version (e.g., if
you want to run RedHat's Fedora
distribution instead of the Debian Ubuntu distribution of Linux),
you can download the free VMWare Server and then
follow the directions in one of the following tutorials (the first one's
pretty good).
- Tutorial
on installing Ubuntu on VMWare Workstation in Windows (you should try to do at least Steps
1-7)
- Please note: this tutorial focuses on VMWare Workstation
and Ubuntu but you should be able to adapt it just as well for VMWare
Server (and RedHat, if you like)
- You can download RedHat's Fedora Linux Distribution from
here
- Another nice tutorial (not as comprehensive as
the first link above) on installing Solaris on VMWare Workstation.
Please be sure to start with Part 1 and then continue to Parts 2 and 3.
